The Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins will take the field Saturday night for game two of three.
The Mariners continue to underachieve, losing six of their last nine games and falling one game below a .500 record. The Mariners have scored only five runs in their last three games and are 3-16 this season when scoring three or less runs. Robinson Cano is still stuck on one homerun, while Justin Smoak has six RBI in his last 10 games. The Mariners pitching does what it can to keep them in games, as their 3.56 ERA is good for 12th in the majors. Getting the nod Saturday is Roenis Elias, who is 3-2 with a 3.69 ERA and has 42 strikeouts in 46.1 innings. This is Elias’ first career game against the Twins.

Don’t look now, but the Twins have won four of their last five games and are back at .500. As has been the case for much of the season, the Twins offense has carried the way, scoring four or more runs in six of their last eight games. However, we can’t say the same for a Twins pitching staff that has allowed four or more runs in seven of their last 10 games. Kurt Suzuki has 11 hits in his last six games and Brian Dozier has a seven-game hitting streak. Samuel Deduno will get the nod, and he’s 0-2 with a 3.64 ERA and has 25 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. Deduno is 2-1 with a 0.90 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners.
The Mariners are 4-0 in Elias' last 4 starts as an underdog and 3-8 in their last 11 during game 2 of a series. The Twins are 2-5 in Deduno's last 7 starts and 2-6 in Deduno's last 8 starts during game 2 of a series. The Mariners are 11-5 in the last 16 meetings vs the Twins.
Despite what the numbers say, I really like Deduno's stuff this season and he's had great success against the Mariners. Meanwhile, the Mariners can't do much of anything right at the moment. Take the Twins at home for the cheap price.
