The New York Yankees battle the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second game of their twin bill on Sunday.
Over the past few seasons Pittsburgh has made a dramatic turnaround from year after year of losing to a team that was a very real threat to win the National League Central. That might be the case once again in 2014 but things haven't been positive thus far. There is still time to get the ship righted and the good news is Milwaukee is the only team in the division that has played well. The difference between this team right now and those of the last few years is the Buccos have been losing too many close ones and are surprisingly not competitive at times with both trends needing to change in such a top heavy division. Gerrit Cole will be on the mound in the second game of a DH with the Yankees. Cole is in need of consistency after going 3-3 with a 3.76 ERA in eight starts covering almost 53 innings.

The Yankees are trying to climb back in to contention in the American League East in a division that used to belong to them. The Yankees have revamped the lineup and have a few new arms in the rotation but will that be enough in the ultra competitive East. The Yankees have been streaky and a bit up and down but when they are clicking on all cylinders they are a threat to win the division. I say threat because it seems this team won't win strictly on the strength of their hitting or pitching but instead need both on the same page to be successful over the long term. Lefty Vidal Nuno makes his 6th start of 2014 when he draws the game two start versus visiting Pittsburgh. Nuno is coming in off a 3.1 inning stint in which he allowed seven runs in a 12-7 loss to the Mets.
I think the Pirates have a slight advantage in the pitching department but in all honesty Cole hasn't been great and their bats can be pitched to. No clue what Vidal will do or what the lineups will look like so use caution here...
