The Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals will begin a three-game series on Tuesday night.
Although the Diamondbacks are 10 games below a .500 record, they have won seven of their last 11 games. A Diamondbacks pitching rotation that is ranked 29th in the majors in ERA has allowed three or less runs in five of their last 10 games, which is a slight improvement. Offensively, the Diamondbacks are putting up more runs and Paul GoldSchmidt does have seven extra-base hits in his last 10 games. Getting the nod Tuesday is Bronson Arroyo, who is 4-2 with a 4.15 ERA and has 27 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. Arroyo is 8-16 with a 4.64 ERA in 36 career starts against the Cardinals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Cardinals have had an up and down season, but have won five of their last seven games and are in second place in the NL Central. For the first time all season the Cardinals are scoring consistently, racking up four or more runs in seven straight games. Yadier Molina has 12 hits in his last seven games and Matt Holliday has 10 hits in as many games. The Cardinals pitching continues to be strong with guys such as Adam Wainwright, who is 6-2 with a 2.11 ERA and has 56 strikeouts in 64 innings. Wainwright is 5-4 with a 2.77 ERA in 11 career games against the Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks are 2-8 in their last 10 games following an off day and 6-22 in their last 28 during game 1 of a series. The Cardinals are 16-5 in Wainwright's last 21 starts vs. National League West and 37-17 in Wainwright's last 54 starts. The Cardinals are 4-1 in Wainwright's last 5 home starts vs. Diamondbacks.
There's no value in taking the Cardinals ML, which is why I'm going to side with the over. The total is too low with Wainwright on the mound, but the over has hit five straight meetings between these two teams. I think that trend continues in this matchup.
