The surging Oakland Athletics begin a weekday series at the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.
Oakland is trying to distance themselves from the rest of the American League West and are certainly doing their part as winners in nine of ten. In this stretch both the pitching and hitting have been on the same page and were at their best in Sunday's 13-3 rout of Cleveland on the road that gave them a sweep of their series. Jesse Chavez picked up the win with a pair of solo homers given up over five innings with the offense taking over from there. The A's pounded out 12 hits and walked nine times with Yoenis Cespedes leading the way with five RBI's while Josh Donaldson, John Jasco and Josh Reddick knocked in seven more. Oakland looks to lefty Drew Pomeranz to keep the wins rolling in when he takes the ball versus Tampa Bay. Pomeranz is 2-0 in two starts where he has not allowed a run on six hits over ten innings.

Tampa Bay is having extreme difficulty stringing together a winning streak of any length and the result has been 5th in the American League East. The good news is no other team has stormed away with the division so the Rays are not in bad shape right now. The danger is that eventually some team will get hot and TB has to be out of the doldrums or they will be out in the cold. The Rays come in off of consecutive defeats following a 6-2 road loss to the Angels in which ace David Price was hit hard with six runs plated on eleven hits including a pair of long balls in 6.2 innings. The offense posted five hits and walked three times with the lone source of scoring being David Kiermaier's two run 7th inning homer. Jake Odorizzi will be on the bump looking to control the heavy hitting Athletics in the series opener Odorizzi has been outstanding the last two times out with zero runs scored in eleven frames while striking out 18.
Both hurlers have been at their best so it's difficult to find an edge on the mound. I think we have to look at the lineups next and ask which one has the most potential to score and that to me is Oakland...
