The Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers will meet for a two-game series in a battle between two of the most disappointing teams in all of baseball. The Rangers have won four of the seven meetings this season.
The Mariners have lost six of their last nine games and enter this matchup one game below a .500 record. The issues for the Mariners have been on the offensive side, as they’ve scored three or less runs in seven of their last 11 games. The Mariners are 3-17 when being held to three or less runs this season. Robinson Cano does have 12 RBI in the month of May, but he’s hit just one homerun that came on April 17th. The Mariners pitching continues to hold up, including Hisashi Iwakuma, who is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and has 15 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Iwakuma is 3-3 with a 3.83 ERA in eight career starts against the Rangers.
USA TODAY Sports
The Rangers haven’t been much better with losses in six of their last eight games, as they’re also two games below a .500 record. The Rangers pitching staff has the 26th worst ERA in baseball and an overpriced batting lineup has produced three or less runs in eight of their last 13 games. Prince Fielder has 10 hits in as many games and is expected to return from a neck injury, and Alex Rios has scored five runs in his last 10 games. Starting will be Colby Lewis, who is 3-2 with a 4.99 ERA and has 29 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. Lewis is 6-5 with a 3.70 ERA in 16 career starts against the Mariners.
The Mariners are 7-1 in their last 8 games following an off day and 4-1 in Iwakuma's last 5 starts. The Rangers are 4-1 in Lewis' last 5 starts and 20-8 in their last 28 home games vs. a team with a losing record. The Rangers are 5-2 in Lewis' last 7 home starts vs. Mariners.
This is a game you probably want to stay away from due to the inconsistency from both teams. However, Iwakuma has looked really sharp this season, while Lewis can get touched up when he isn't dialed in. I'll take the Mariners on the road for the cheap price.
