The Line: Tampa Bay Rays +110 / Oakland Athletics -120 --- Over/Under: 7 See the Latest Odds
The Oakland Athletics will look to sweep the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday afternoon.
The Athletics have absolutely been on fire, winning 11 of their last 12 games and creating some nice separation in the AL West. A lot of this success has come from an Athletics pitching staff that has allowed three or less runs in 10 of their last 12 games. In fact, the A’s are 26-3 this season when allowing three or less runs. Offensively the Athletics have also been getting the job done, including Brandon Moss who has four homers in his last seven games. Taking the mound Thursday is Sonny Gray, who is 5-1 with a 2.10 ERA and has 52 strikeouts in 60 innings. This will Gray’s second career start against the Rays.

The Rays have been playing some dreadful baseball, losing four in a row and seven of their last 10 games overall. Just in the Rays last four games, they’ve scored a combined four runs. Evan Longoria has just two hits in his last six games, but James Loney is batting .311 and has gotten on base at least once in 10 straight games. The Rays pitching has also been terrible but may improve with Alex Cobb on the mound, a pitcher who is 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA and has 14 strikeouts in 19 innings. Cobb is 3-2 with a 2.78 ERA in five career starts against the Athletics.
The Athletics are 6-0 in Gray's last 6 road starts and 10-0 in Gray's last 10 starts with 5 days of rest. The Rays are 11-3 in Cobb's last 14 starts during game 3 of a series and 8-3 in Cobb's last 11 starts vs. American League West.
While Cobb has been increible and is always worth a look when getting plus money, I just have no faith in how the Rays have been playing. I'm going to continue to ride the red hot A's and take them for the cheap price with their ace on the mound.
