The Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Sunday at Great American Ballpark on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
The Cincinnati Reds got the best of the Cardinals on Friday but on Saturday they couldn’t take advantage of their chances losing to the Cards. Ryan Ludwick hit a hoe run, Brandon Phillips had three hits, and Zack Cozart had two hits as the Reds scored three runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Tony Cingrani allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-4 for the season. For Sunday Night’s game the Reds start Mike Leake who has three no decsions in his last three starts. For the season Leake has allowed 54 hits and 21 earned runs while striking out 38 over 65 innings for a 2-3 record and a 2.91 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals never trailed on Saturday as they beat the Reds in Cincinnati. Yadier Molina hit a home run and Mat Holliday and Jon Jay each had three hits as the Cardinals scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Jaime Garcia allowed six hits and two runs while striking out seven over 5.2 innings to get the win and go to 1-0 for the season and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 15th save. For Sunday’s game the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who is looking like a Cy Young Award candidate. For the season Wainwright has allowed 48 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out 65 over 73 innings for a 7-2 record and a 1.85 ERA.
Cincinnati is 4-2 against a team with a winning record, 3-8 as an underdog, and 1-5 in Leake’s last six starts. St. Louis is 7-1 as a favorite, 23-9 in game three of a series, and 38-17 in Wainwright’s last 55 starts.
I don’t love the odds here but it is just tough to go against Wainwright these days.
