The Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners conclude their series at Safeco Field Thursday night.
The Angels seem to be the one team that has the pitching and hitting to challenge Oakland in the American League West and have shown us over the past few weeks. Despite their 3-1 loss to Seattle on Wednesday the LAA have still won seven of eleven. The offense ever got going until the 9th and a great start by CJ Wilson went by the wayside. Wilson allowed all three runs on five hits in 7.1 innings but that was just too much with the bats producing four hits with Albert Pujols driving in Mike Trout in the 9th. Matt Shoemaker heads to the bump against the Mariners for his 4th start of 2014. Shoemaker has been a solid contributor thus far with a 2-1 record and 3.18 ERA covering 22.2 innings of work.

I view Seattle as an improved squad but also one that needs a few more pieces to become a factor in the West. More hitting and pitching would do the job but that's on the wish list of almost every team. The Mariners were just fine in the pitching department Wednesday with Felix Hernandez in control from start to finish. Hernandez gave up the lone run over 8.2 frames to fall one out short of a complete game. The M's managed only five hits but that was plenty with Mike Zunino clubbing a two run homer and singling in another. Brandon Mauer opposes the dangerous offense of the Angels in the final game of their series. Mauer has generally struggled in the early going with a 1-3 record and an ERA of almost seven.
Shoemaker is tough to back because he has limited experience but he has done well and has the advantage on the mound. I'm counting on a few runs against Mauer so the Angels at a decent price is how I'm going...
