The Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros will play game two of four on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
The Orioles have lost six of their last nine games and fall to a .500 record with a loss on Thursday. The Orioles ERA of 4.33 has cost them a great deal, as they’ve allowed five or more runs in six of their last nine games. The good news is that they only allowed three runs in the loss to the Astros, but the lineup produced just one run on seven hits. The Orioles are 8-18 when scoring three or fewer runs this season. Nelson Cruz is riding a 10-game hitting streak and had two hits in Thursday’s game. Getting the nod is Miguel Gonzalez, who is 3-3 with a 4.35 ERA and has 46 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. Gonzalez is 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA in three career starts against the Astros.

Don’t look now, but the Astros have won six straight games and are quietly gaining a little ground in the AL West. The reason behind this success is an Astros pitching staff that has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of their last nine games. Keep in mind that the Astros have the 26th worst ERA at 4.26. The Astros are 15-6 when allowing three or less runs this season. Offensively, the Astros bats have also woken up a bit, as George Springer has seven homeruns in his last seven games. Brett Oberholtzer gets the nod, and he’s 1-6 with a 5.32 ERA and has 39 strikeouts in 44 innings. This is Oberholtzer’s second career start against the Orioles.
The Orioles are 5-0 in Gonzalez's last 5 starts as a favorite and 6-13 in Gonzalez's last 19 road starts. The Astros are 1-11 in Oberholtzer's last 12 starts and 0-5 in Oberholtzer's last 5 home starts.
Just how long can the Astros remain hot? Who knows. I do know that it's nearly impossible not to back Baltimore at this price, especially with Oberholtzer's inability to lead his team to a win.
