O.co Coliseum and the Oakland Athletics play host to the Los Angeles Angels in an AL West tilt.
The Angels are breathing down the necks of the Athletics and moved a step closer to the top with the A's losing Thursday and Los Angeles winning. The LAA topped Seattle 7-5 for their 7th win in eleven contests as the arms and bats on the same page more often then not in this stretch. The starting pitching and the offense were a tough combination with Matt Shoemaker improving to 3-1 with three runs allowed through 5.1 innings with Fernando Salas serving up a two run bomb in the 9th. The Angels totaled 15 hits and walked five times with Erick Aybar posting three hits including a homer while driving in three with Mike Trout knocking in two more. The Angels turn to Garrett Richards on the bump to open the series with first place Oakland. Richards has been a key member of the rotation with a 4-1 record and 3.00 ERA in ten outings.

The Athletics grip on first in the American League West seemed secure a few weeks ago but the Angels have been playing well and the Athletics have not with losses in six of eight following Thursday's 5-4 defeat to visiting Detroit. No run support and poor work out of the pen negated a solid effort on the mound from Jesse Chavez who was charged with three runs in six frames with Jim Johnson coming on to allow two more in 7th which ended up being the winning runs. The A's had plenty of chances on nine hits and nine walks with Nick Punto slamming a two run homer while Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick driving in 9th inning runs. Left hander Drew Pomeranz makes his 5th start since coming out of the bullpen. Pomeranz has thrown the ball well with a 1.38 ERA overall but has not gone past the 5th inning as of yet.
I really want to take the Angels but Richards has struggled with Oakland but on the flipside Pomeranz doesn't go deep and we'll see plenty of the A's pen. May be something small on the visitors but I don't have a great feel for this...
