The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will play game two of four when they meet Friday night at Busch Stadium.
The Giants remain one of the hottest teams in baseball with wins in seven of their last eight games. The Giants pitching rotation remains top notch with the 3rd best ERA in baseball, but it’s been the offense that has produced four or more runs in nine of their last 10 games that’s made the difference in this run. The Giants are 26-10 when scoring more than three runs this season. Michael Morse has eight RBI in his last four games and Pablo Sandoval has at least one RBI in nine straight games. Getting the nod Friday is Madison Bumgarner, who is 6-3 with a 3.15 ERA and has 75 strikeouts in 65.2 innings. Bumgarner is 2-3 with a 4.32 ERA in five career starts against the Cardinals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Cardinals have been playing a lot less consistent lately, losing four of their last seven games. Surprisingly, it’s been the Cardinals pitching that has been hit during this stretch, allowing six or more runs in three of their last four games, including in the Thursday loss to the Giants. Those are numbers you can’t allow when the Cardinals are 7-17 when allowing more than three runs. Offensively, Allen Craig has eight hits in his last five games and Matt Carpenter has an 11-game hitting streak. Adam Wainwright gets the start, and he’s 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA and has 77 strikeouts in 81 innings. Wainwright is 4-4 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 career games against the Giants.
The Giants are 4-1 in Bumgarner's last 5 starts as an underdog and 6-2 in Bumgarner's last 8 road starts. The Cardinals are 37-14 in Wainwright's last 51 starts as a favorite and 40-19 in Wainwright's last 59 home starts. The Cardinals are 4-0 in Wainwright's last 4 starts vs. Giants, while the Giants are 0-4 in Bumgarner's last 4 starts vs. Cardinals.
With two aces on the mound, it's better to just go with the team that's getting the plus money. It just so happens that's the Giants in this spot, the team that's playing much better baseball as of late. This is the value bet of the day.
