The Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics continue their first place battle in the American League West.
The Angels have kicked off the last few years on the slow side but have held their own in 2014. Los Angeles is now on the doorstep of the top spot in the AL West with their pitching and hitting coming together nicely. Having said that it was the pitching that did them in Friday's 9-5 loss at Oakland with Garrett Richards get tagged for five runs in the first with only two outs recorded. The bats made things mildly interesting on homers from Mike Trout and Howie Kendrick with Kendrick and CJ Cron driving in two runs. Tyler Skaggs takes the ball in game two of their series at Oakland on Saturday looking to bounce back from a 5-1 defeat at Seattle. Skaggs was charged with all five runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings.

The Athletics seemed like they were on the verge of pulling away in the American League West but their offense has been on the skids the last few weeks and their pitching hasn't been able to win on their own. The pitching wasn't great in the series opener versus the Angels but it didn't matter with the offense pounding out eleven hits and walking five times. Josh Donaldson mashed two homers and drove in four with Brandon Moss connecting on a gand slam. That made a winner of Drew Pomeranz who allowed five runs over 5.1 innings pitched. Left hander Tommy Milone looks to continue his string of strong pitching when he faces the Angels. Milone was at his best in a 10-0 rout of Detroit with a four hitter over six scoreless frames.
No clear cut winner here with both offenses capable of scoring in bunches. I don't have an edge so I'll simply side with the home team...
