The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets face off on Monday in Philadelphia as they close out their weekend series.
The Philadelphia Phillies have struggled against the Mets and that trend continued on Sunday as they lost in extra innings. Marlon Byrd and Ryan Howard each hit home runs and Carlos Ruiz had two hits as the Phillies scored three runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels allowed six hits and two runs while striking out eight over 7.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Phillippe Aumont took the loss. For Monday’s game the Phillies start Roberto Hernandez who has a no decision and a loss in his last two starts. For the season Hernandez has allowed 55 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 42 over 52.2 innings for a 2-2 record and a 3.76 ERA.

The New York Mets are looking to make a move in the standings and after winning on Sunday they remain four games behind the Braves in the NL East. Lucas Duda hit a home run, Eric Campbell had two hits, and David Wright had a hit as the Mets scored four runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Jon Niese allowed Eight hits and two runs while striking out six over 8.0 innings for a no decision as Joshua Edgin got the win and Jenrry Mejia earned his sixth save. For Monday’s game the Mets start Bartolo Colon who has won his last two starts. For the season Colon has allowed 76 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 52 over 64.2 innings for a 4-5 record and a 4.73 ERA.
Philadelphia is 5-1 during game five of a series, 5-3 as a home favorite, and 1-5 against the NL East. New York is 5-1 in their last six games, 5-2 in game five of a series , and 6-1 in their last seven road games against a team with a losing record. New York is 9-3 in their last 12 games against Philadelphia.
The Mets simply own the Phillies and I don’t look for that to change in this one.
