The Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres will play game two of a three-game series Tuesday night at Petco Park.
The Pirates are starting to look like the team we thought we were going to get in the beginning of the season, winning four of their last five games. The Pirates pitching staff has improved a great deal as of late, allowing three or less runs in eight of their last 12 games. The Pirates are 18-6 when allowing three or less runs this season. Offensively, Niel Walker had three RBI in Monday’s win and Pedro Alvarez has four multi-hit games in his last seven. Getting the nod is Gerrit Cole, who is 5-3 with a 3.80 ERA and has 63 strikeouts in 71 innings. Cole is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two career starts against the Padres.
USA TODAY Sports
The Padres have lost nine of their last 14 games and were absolutely creamed in Monday’s 10-3 loss. The Padres just can’t put runs on the board to save their life and now their pitching rotation has allowed 29 runs in their last five games. The Padres have scored more than three runs just 24 times in the 58 games this season. Seth Smith, however, has scored a run in three straight games. Jesse Hahn mill make his major league debut on Tuesday. Hahn was 6-4 with a 2.34 ERA and had 150 strikeouts in 153.2 innings when pitching in the minors.
The Pirates are 5-1 in Coles last 6 starts and 6-1 in Coles last 7 starts vs. a team with a losing record. The Padres are 4-1 in their last 5 during game 2 of a series. The Pirates are 8-17 in the last 25 meetings in San Diego.
There's no way I'm backing the Padres regardless of what the line is. Look for the Bucs to stay hot and take the ML.
