The surging Pittsburgh Pirates shoot for another win at Petco Park versus the San Diego Padres.
Pittsburgh has suffered through a slow start in the early going and have not looked like the competitive team we've seen the last few years. Having said that the Pirates have been slowly getting their act together after Tuesday's 4-1 victory at San Diego gave the team wins in seven of eleven. Gerrit Cole held the San Diego attack to a run on four hits and a pair of bases on balls through 5.2 innings to pick up the win. The bats gave Cole all the scoring they needed with Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez clubbing two run homers. Left hander Francisco Liriano looks to build on the momentum of his first win when he takes on San Diego. Liriano defeated the Dodgers on the road 2-1 with 5.2 scoreless innings pitched.

The Padres have been playing .500 ball over the past few weeks but that means they have been losing ground in the National League West standings to a red hot San Francisco. San Diego never got their offense going Tuesday which wasn't a good thing with a rookie hurler going. Jesse Hahn allowed all four runs on six hits and a pair of homers before an early exit after 3.2 innings. The offense mustered four hits and a trio of free passes with Yonder Alonzo rapping an RBI single that scored Chase Headley. The Padres give the ball to Ian Kennedy for Wednesday's start versus red hot Pittsburgh. Kennedy has won consecutive outings with one run allowed in each on on six hits and five BB in 12 innings.
Kennedy has clearly been the better hurler with Liriano occasionally showing glimpses of prior years. I'm simply going with the better team but will probably sit this one out...
