The Washington Nationals clash with the Philadelphia Phillies in the final game of their weekday set.
Philadelphia has been struggling on the mound and at the plate and the result is last place in the National League East. The struggles continued in Wednesday's 8-4 loss at Wahington which saddled the Phillies with defeats in eight of eleven. Neither the work on the mound or at the plate stood out with AJ Burnett still having problems with all eight runs scored on ten hits and four free passes through six innings. The Philadelphia offense produced nine hits with John Mayberry connecting on a pinch hit two run homer. Kyle Kendrick gets Thursday's start in the final game of their series at Washington. Kendrick has been up and down and it was down last time out with four runs scored in six innings of a 5-4 loss.

It looks like the NL East might be a three team race with nobody really standing out thus far which makes every game extremely important. The Nationals win over Philadelphia Wednesday was their third in four outings and enabled the Nats to pick up another game on first place Atlanta who lost. Stephen Strasburg survived some shoddy fielding to allow four runs (two earned) over seven frames while striking out eleven. Anthony Rendon paced an eleven hit attack with a homer and three RBI's with Denard Span and Danny Espinosa knocking in two apiece. Doug Fister makes his 6th start of 2014 and second career start against Philadelphia on Thursday. Fister has been solid over his last three outings with a 3-0 record and a 2.45 ERA.
Is Washington finally going to break loose or are they going back to playing .500 ball? I have no idea about this bunch but on paper they are the right choice...
