The Atlanta Braves are in first place in the NL East but that lead has shrunk to 1/100th of a percentage point. The Braves are 14-14 on the road this season, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two games. As a team the Braves are hitting .240 with Justin Upton hitting .294, Freddie Freeman hitting .290, and Andrelton Simmons hitting .259. As a team the Braves pitching staff has an ERA of 2.98 with the starters at 2.92 and the bullpen at 3.15. For game one at Arizona the Braves start Julio Teheran who has won his last three starts. For the season Teheran has allowed 58 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 66 over 83.2 innings for a 5-3 record and a 1.83 ERA.
Arizona is 6-14 against the NL East, 3-12 as a home underdog, and 1-7 in McCarthy’s last eight home starts. Atlanta is 2-5 as a favorite, 0-7 on the road against a team with a losing record, and 9-2 in Teheran’s last 11 starts. Atlanta is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings of these two.
Arizona has played well recently and the Braves have been inconsistent and while I rarely put too much stock in starting pitching Teheran has enough of an edge here for me to take the Braves.
