The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers will begin a three-game series on Friday night.
The Red Sox were just swept by the Cleveland Indians and have dropped five games below a .500 record. The Red Sox have been one of the most inconsistent teams in baseball and it’s tough to determine exactly which team is going to show up. One thing we do know is that the Red Sox offense has picked up a bit, scoring four or more runs in nine of their last 12 games. David Ortiz has eight RBI in his last 10 games and A.J. Pierzynski has 15 hits in his last 10 games. Getting the nod is Rubby De La Rosa, who is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and has eight strikeouts in seven innings. This will be De La Rosa’s second career game against the Tigers.
USA TODAY Sports
The Tigers continue their slump by losing nine of their last 12 games and are only six games above a .500 record at this point. The Tigers have allowed four or more runs in 13 of their last 17 games, while the lineup has produced three or less runs in five straight games. The Tigers have simply become one of the more disappointing teams in baseball over the last two weeks. Torii Hunter has just one hit in his last five games. Drew Smyly gets the start, and he’s 2-4 with a 4.10 ERA and has 45 strikeouts in 48.1 innings. Smyly is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three career games against the Red Sox.
The Red Sox are 4-0 in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning record and 1-11 in their last 12 games following a loss. The Tigers are 0-4 in Smyly's last 4 home starts and 4-1 in Smyly's last 5 starts vs. American League East. The Red Sox are 3-8 in the last 11 meetings in Detroit.
Both teams have been struggling and De La Rosa looked great in his first start of the season. I'll throw the Red Sox a bone for the plus money.
