The Washington Nationals travel to the west coast where they open a series with San Diego Padres.
Washington has begun to piece together a hot streak but after watching this team win a few games before I need to see more before I can say they are hot. The Nationals defeated Philadelphia 4-2 on Thursday for victories in five of six where the offense and pitching have been on the same page. Starter Doug Fister continued to throw well with both runs plated on four hits through seven frames to get the win. The Nationals totaled seven hits and walked five times with Adam LaRoche clubbing a two run homer. Tanner Roark is hoping for some run support when he takes the ball versus San Diego Friday. Roark has been outstanding the last three times out but is 0-3 despite an impressive 2.25 ERA.

San Diego looks strong enough to give any team in the National League West a tough go at it but probably not over the long haul because of their struggles at the plate. The pitching can hold their own but not win consistently without some runs to work with. The Padres enter their series with Washington off a 3-2 decision over visiting Pittsburgh which snapped a three game skid thanks to a strong effort on the mound by Ian Kennedy. Kennedy gave up just a pair of runs on five hits over six frames while the bats did their damage on a single hit and nine BB with an error and a couple of sarifices getting the job done. San Diego tabs right hander Tyson Ross for the series opening start against visiting Washington on Friday night. Ross has been a strong member of the rotation with a 6-4 record and 2.85 ERA over 12 starts.
San Diego can be tough to figure out because their offense is inconsistent and Washington just struggles at times without explanation so I really don't have an angle here but I'll sleep on it and try to find something...
