The Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees face off on Sunday at Kauffman stadium as they close out their series.
The Kansas City Royals fell to the Yankees on Friday but on Saturday they reversed it by getting the win. Salvador Perez had three hits including a home run, Eric Hosmer hit a home run, and Lorenzo Cain had three hits as the Royals scored eight runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Danny Duffy allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four over 5.2 innings to get a no decision as Aaron Crowe got the win to go to 3-1 for the year. For Sunday’s game the Royals start James Shields who has three no decisions in his last three starts. For the season Shields has allowed 88 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 70 over 85.2 innings for a 6-3 record and a 3.68 ERA.

The New York Yankees simply didn’t have answers on Saturday as they fell to the Royals. Jacoby Ellsbury and Yangervis Solarte each had two hits and Derek Jeter had a hit as the Yankees scored four runs on eight hits, Starting pitcher David Phelps was hit hard allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs while striking out four over 5.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-4 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Yankees start Hiroki Kuroda who hasn’t lost in six starts. For the season Kuroda has allowed 77 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 51 over 71.2 innings for a 4-3 record and a 4.27 ERA.
Kansas City is 2-5 as a home favorite, 24-11 at home against a team with a winning record, and 27-9 in Shields’ last 36 starts. New York is 5-2 in their last seven road games, 1-5 as an underdog, and 2-9 in Kuroda’s last 11 road starts. New York is 5-1 in Kansas City.
I have to give the edge to the Royals here as Shields is just one of the better options on the mound in baseball.
