The San Diego Padres head to the east coast to begin a series with the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday.
If you follow San Diego you know the name of their game is offense or lack of it as hitting and scoring are not areas they excel in. That generally means the pitching has to be at the top of their game or the results won't be favorable which was the case in Sunday's 6-0 loss to visiting Washington. Starter Eric Stults was charged for all six runs in only 2.1 innings on eight hits while four relievers tossed shutout ball the rest of the way. However, the offense saw Seth Smith triple and Alexi Amarista single while striking out 12 times in being shutout two times over the weekend. Ian Kennedy opens the series on the mound with Philadelphia on Tuesday. Kennedy has been red hot in his last three with a 3-0 record and 2.00 ERA.

The Phillies have been fading and need to stop the bleeding soon or they will become an afterthought in the National League East. The offense failed them in a 4-1 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday to give the team defeats in eight of ten. Rookie David Buchanan didn't throw the ball all that badly with four runs plated through six innings but his margin for error was small with little support to lean on. The Phils totaled six hits and a trio of free passes with the lone run scoring on a Chase Utley sacrifice fly. The Phillies send AJ Burnett to the bump versus the visiting Padres hoping he can right the ship. Burnett has not logged a quality start in six consecutive outings.
I think Ian Kennedy gets the nod on the mound as he has been lights out recently. However, the Padres bats are about as bad as I've seen. Somehow Kennedy has won with little support and might have to do it again. I'm taking the visitors because of better odds and not because I like them...
