The Los Angeles Angels host the Oakland Athletics in the final game of their series on Wednesday.
Oakland will leave Los Angeles leading the American League West regardless of what happens Wednesday. I'm sure they prefer to win and quite possibly need to win for the simple fact of putting more distance between them and their biggest threat. Having said that I see an A's squad that can hit and pitch with anyone when playing well but there seems to be more parity in the division and that means stiffer competition and the greater chance of losing. Right now the Angels and Mariners are right in their shadow with an always dangerous Texas waiting in the wings. Lefty Tommy Milone gets the start on the mound versus the rival Angels in the last game of their series. Milone is 3-3 on the year with 3.31 ERA in eleven outings.

Several years ago the American League West belonged to the Angels but Texas took over for a few seasons and now Oakland is attempting to do the same. In a way the Athletics remind me of some of those Angels teams that dominated the West because of their hitting but I believe the LAA have a decent balance of offense and pitching which makes them very dangerous. My gut tells me the Angels might be a bat or so short with another quality arm needed to take control of this division and they might fill those needs when the trade deadline approaches. Jered Weaver toes the rubber against the visiting Athletics in the series finale'. Weaver has gone 7-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 13 starts this season.
These teams might be nip and tuck throughout 2014 which makes every meeting crucial. I am leaning to Weaver and the home team here as the big right hander needs to pitch big from here on out in my view...
