The New York Mets and the San Diego Padres face off on Sunday at Citi Field as they close out their weekend series.
The New York Mets are sliding in the standings in the NL East and they slid further on Saturday losing to the Padres. Lucas Duda and Ruben Tejada each had hits as the Mets failed to score on two hits. Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler allowed six hits and four runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-7 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Mets start Daisuke Matsuzaka who has surprised plenty of people with his strong effort thus far this season. For the year Matsuzaka has allowed 21 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 39 over 39.2 innings for a 3-0 record and a 2.95 ERA.

The San Dieog padres play in one of the toughest divisions in baseball but they gained a game on the leaders on Saturday as they beat the Mets. Chase Headley had two hits including a home run, Yonder Alonso had two hits, and Everth Cabrera and Seth Smith each had hits as the Padres scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Jesse Hahn allowed one hit and struck out seven over 6.0 innings to get the win to go to 1-1 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Padres start Ian Kennedy who lost last time out ending a personal three game winning streak. For the season Kennedy has allowed 77 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 91 over 86.2 innings for a 5-7 record and a 3.63 ERA.
New York is 402 at home against a team with a losing record, 2-9 in their last 11 games, and 6-1 in Matsuzaka’s last seven starts. San Diego is 1-4 as a road favorite, 1-5 against the NL East, and 5-0 in Kennedy’s last five starts in gam three of a series. San Diego is 2-6 in their last eight games in New York.
We have two pitchers in this one that are comeback stories and I don’t expect a ton of hitting and that plays into the Padres hands as that is their type of game so I will go with San Diego in what is really just a lean.
