The St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Friday at Busch Stadium for game two of their series.
The St. Louis Cardinals continue to chase the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central and they lost a full game on the leaders on Thursday as the Brewers won while the Cardinals lost to the Phillies. Matt Carpenter, Matt Adams, and Yadier Molina each had hits as the Cardinals scored one run on four hits. Starting pitcher Shelby Miller allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out four over 6.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-6 for the season. For Friday’s game the Cardinals start Jaime Garcia who has won all three of his decisions this season. For the year Garcia has allowed 32 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 32 over 38.2 innings for a 3-0 record and a 3.72 ERA.

The Philadelphia Phillies are heating up as they won their fourth game in a row beating the Cardinals on Thursday. Ryan Howard had two hits including a home run, Chase Utley had two hits, and Jimmy Rollins had a hit as the Cardinals scored four runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher David Buchanan allowed four hits and a run while striking out four over 7.2 innings to get the win and go to 3-3 for the season and Jonathan Papelbon earned his 17th save. For Friday’s game the Phillies start A.J. Burnett who has lost two of his last three starts. For the season Burnett has allowed 90 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 74 over 95 innings for a 4-6 record and a 4.17 ERA.
St. Louis is 8-4 in their last 12 games, 5-3 in their last eight home games, and 6-2 in Garcia’s last eight starts in game two of a series. Philadelphia is 5-0in their last five road games, 5-0 as a road underdog, and 1-4 in Burnett’s last five starts with 4 days of rest. Philadelphia is 2-4 in their last five games in St. Louis.
This is a tough call and while I had the Phillies in my “Dog of the Day” video, I am less confident here but can’t see laying these kind of odds on the Cardinals.
