The Tampa Bay Rays and the Houston Astros face off on Friday at Tropicana Field for game two of their series.
The Tampa Bay Rays have had their share of struggles this season but they showed no signs of those on Thursday as they blanked the Astros. Evan Longoria and Kevin Kiermaier hit home runs and James Loney had two hits as the Rays scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Chris Archer allowed three hits and struck out eight over 6.2 innings to get the win and raise his record to 4-4 for the season. For Friday’s game the Rays start David Price who got the win in his last outing to end a three decision losing streak. For the season Price has allowed 110 hits and 47 earned runs while striking out 121 over 107.2 innings for a 5-6 record and a 3.93 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Houston Astros have shown some signs of life this season but on Thursday they lost for the fourth time in a row. Dexter Fowler had two hits and George Springer had a hit as the Astros failed to score getting three hits total. Starting pitcher Collin McHugh allowed four hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings to take the los and fall to 4-5 for the season. For Friday’s game the Astros start Jarred Cosart who has won three of his last four starts. For the season Cosart has allowed 75 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 58 over 80 innings for a 6-5 record and a 4.16 ERA.
Tampa Bay is 5-11 as a favorite, 3-6 in their last nine home games, and 38-18 in Price’s last 56 starts against a team with a losing record. Houston is 18-46 against the AL East, 14-38 against a left-handed starter, and 5-2 on Cosart’s last seven starts. Houston is 3-12 in the last 15 meetings of these two.
I was tempted to take Houston here but they appear to be sliding and Cosart’s record looks to be inflated making Price and the Rays the play here.
