The Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Mariners continue their series at Kauffman Stadium.
Seattle is in a decent spot record wise compared to previous seasons but decent isn't going to win the American League West. The Mariners had been fading but have won four of six after outlasting Kansas City 7-5 on Friday with the offense and pen saving the day. Hisashi Iwakuma was tagged for all five runs but six relievers held the Royals off the scoreboard. Mike Zunino, Brad Miller and Logan Morrison went deep with Morrison and Robinson Cano combining for five RBI's. Chris Young shoots for win number seven when he faces the big bats of Kansas City on Saturday. Young looks to duplicate his last effort when he tossed six scoreless innings in a 5-1 win versus San Diego.

After a two week stretch where they did not taste defeat and took over the top spot in the American League Central the Royals have dropped back to back contests. The team generally received solid pitching and hitting during the hot streak but the arms shouldered the blame for this with James Shields charged with five runs through seven frames before Greg Holland absorbed the loss with two runs plated in the 9th. The Royals pounded out 14 hits with Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez leaving the yard and knocking in a pair. Left hander Jason Vargas will be on the mound Saturday looking for his 6th consecutive quality start. On the season Vargas is 7-2 with a 3.25 ERA.
Both hurlers are capable but Vargas has some better numbers although the price tag is a bit rich for me. The Royals really need to avoid another loss...
