The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs will play a rubber game on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates are back in a little bit of a slump by losing four of their last six games and moving within two games of being a .500 team again. The Pirates pitching continues to be inconsistent, as they’ve allowed four or more runs in five of their last eight games. Overall, the Pirates have an ERA of 3.92. Offense is an area where the Pirates have really improved, as Andrew McCutchen has 10 RBI in his last 10 games. Brandon Cumpton gets the nod, and he’s 2-2 with a 5.82 ERA and has 24 strikeouts in 38.2 innings. This will be Cumpton’s second career start against the Cubs.

The Cubs have split their last 10 games and can win their third series in a row on Sunday. The reason for the slight turnaround has been a Cubs offense that has produced four or more runs in five of their last seven games. This was a Cubs team that would struggle to put one run on the board most games. Now, Starlin Castro has 11 RBI in his last eight games. Pitching, the Cubs have ninth best ERA at 3.93. Jason Hammel takes the hill, and he’s 6-4 with a 3.02 ERA and has 85 strikeouts in 89.1 innings. Hammel is 4-2 with a 4.12 ERA in seven career games against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 5-2 in their last 7 games as a road underdog and 5-13 in their last 18 during game 3 of a series. The Cubs are 4-1 in Hammels last 5 home starts and 11-27 in their last 38 during game 3 of a series. The Pirates are 11-5 in the last 16 meetings.
Even with Hammel on the mound, I just don't trust the Cubs and don't think you do either. I like the Pirates to get the job done on the road and there's value with the plus money.
