The Miami Marlins hope to reverse their recent slowdown at the expense of the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
The Marlins were on the verge of taking over the top spot in the National League East several weeks ago but things haven't been goinng as planned lately. The Fish were losers in seven of eleven following a 7-4 loss at Citizen's Bank Park on Tuesday. Andrew Heaney dropped his second straight career start with five runs plated over five frames with Bryan Morris giving up two more. Miami totaled ten hits and walked four times with Garrett Jones going deep and knocking in two. Henderson Alvarez looks to continue his hot work on the mound when he faces off with the rival Phillies Wednesday. Alvarez is only 4-3 despite a 2.39 ERA although the Marlins are 10-5 in his outings.

Philadelphia has seen a few hot and cold streaks over the first half of the year and need to reduce the frequency and length of any slowdown in the future if they have any idea of challenging in the NL East. Tuesday's win ended a three game slide as rookie David Buchanan improved to 4-3 with a pair of runs plated through five innings of work. BJ Rosenberg allowed two more but the Philladelphia did plenty of damage on seven hitsand a trio of bases on balls. Marlon Byrd slugged a homer and drove in two while scoring twice with Cody Asche knocking in two more. AJ Burnett looks for his 4th consecutive quality start when he gets the nod against the visiting Marlins Wednesday. Burnett is coming in off of a complete game 5-1 victory at St Louis.
Alvarez has the better overall numbers but Burnett has been rock solid over the last three. Neither team has been a sure thing so I'll simply go with the better odds...
