The Kansas City Royals and the Los Angeles Angels face off on Friday at Kaufman Stadium in game one of their weekend series of American League post-season contenders.
The Kansas City Royals have been streaky this season but they have played well enough to be just percentage points out of a Wildcard spot in the AL. The Royals are 19-21 at home, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two games. As a team the Royals are hitting .260 with Alcides Escobar hitting .284, Salvador Perez hitting .281, and Alex Gordon hitting .280. The Royals pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.68 with the starters at 3.68 and the bullpen at 3.66. For game one against the Angels the Royals start Jason Vargas who is 2-1 in his last three starts. For the season Vargas has allowed 106 hits and 38 earned runs while striking out 73 over 108.1 innings for a 7-3 record and a 3.16 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Los Angeles Angels have the fifth best record in all of baseball as they look to put previous seasons of disappointing play behind them. The Angels are 18-19 on the road, 8-2 in their last 10 games, and they have won six games in a row. As a team the Angels are hitting .259 with Josh Hamilton hitting .321, Mike Trout hitting .308, and Erick Aybar hitting .284. The Angels pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.84 with the starters at 3.59 and the bullpen at 4.38. For game one against the Royals the Angels start Matt Shoemaker who has won his last five decisions. For the season Shoemaker has allowed 47 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 51 over 50 innings for a 5-1 record and a 3.42 ERA.
Kansas City is 1-5 in their last six home games, 1-6 in their last seven games, and 5-1 in Vargas’ last six starts in game one of a series. Los Angeles is 11-5 against a left-handed starter, 2-5 in their last seven road games against a team with a winning record, and 4-0 in Shoemaker’s last four starts. Los Angeles has won six of their last seven meetings with Kansas City.
This one should be a dog fight and really to me it looks like a coin flip but the Angels are playing better baseball however, I don’t like the road trip in from the West Coast so my play here is just a lean to K.C.
