The Boston Red Sox travel to the Big Apple to open a weekend series with the New York Yankees.
The big story surrounding the Red Sox is they look nothing like the team that stormed to AL East title a season ago. Consistency has been a problem and has had a hand in losses in five of seven. Boston hopes to build on a 5-4 victory at Seattle Wednesday as they took an early lead and survived a dangerous Mariners team. Clay Buchholz picked up the win although he allowed all four runs on three homers over 7.1 frames. Boston pounded out eleven hits with David Ortiz leaving the yard and driving in three runs overall. The Red Sox are scheduled to start Brandon Workman against the Yankees in the opener. Workman has been effective in five outings with a 1-0 record and 2.88 ERA.

The Yankees have been in a bit of a funk over the past week and it's dropped them to third in the American League East behind Baltimore. The Bronx Bombers did end a four game slide with a 5-3 decision at Toronto Wednesday behind solid pitching and a few clutch hits. Veteran Hiroki Kuroda gave up all three runs on eight hits through 6.1 innings of work to even his record at 5-5 and help the Yankees avoid getting swept. New York mustered nine hits and five bases on balls with Mark Texiera leading the way with a homer and three RBI's. Left hander Vidal Nuno takes the ball in game one versus the Red Sox on Friday night. Nuno has been struggling over his last three outings with an 0-2 record and 7.80 ERA.
There is not much to like about the way either team is playing right now but the Yankees are the better team but I think Workman has the edge on the mound. Not a game I'm rushing to bet...
