The Detroit Tigers and the Houston Astros face off on Saturday for game tow of their series at Minute Maid Park.
The Houston Astros are a work in progress but for the first time in several seasons they appear to be making a step upwards and we saw it on Friday as they beat the Tigers. Jose Altuve had four hits, Jason Castro hit a home run, and George Springer had a hit as the Astros scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Brad Peacock allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out three over 6.2 innings to not get a decision as Jose Veras blew the save and Jake Buchanan got the win to raise his record to 1-1 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Astros start brett Oberholtzer who is 2-1 in his last thee starts. For the season Oberholtzer as allowed 59 hits and has a 4.76 ERA over 51 innings for a 2-6 record.

The Detroit Tigers continue to lead the AL Central but their relief was exposed once again as they lost in extra innings to the Astros on Friday. Ian Kinsler had three hits, Nick Castellanos hit a home run, and J.D. Martinez had two hits as the Tigers scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander allowed six hits and three runs while striking out eight over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Blaine Hardy took the loss to fall to 0-1 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Tigers start Max Scherzer who has won three of his last four starts. For the season Scherzer has allowed 100 hits and 43 earned runs while striking out 119 over 104.1 innings for a 9-3 record and a 3.71 ERA.
Houston is 9-1 against the AL Central, 4-8 in their last 12 games, and 2-11 in Oberholtzer’s last 13 starts. Detroit is 7-2 in their last nine road games, 21-9 against a left-handed starter, and 5-2 in Scherzer’s last seven road starts. Detroit is 5-2 in their last seven games in Houston.
