The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Saturday at PETCO Park for game two of their NL West series.
The San Diego Padres are having one of their best weeks of the season and it continued on Friday as they beat the Giants. Chase Headley had four hits, Alexi Amarista had two hits including a home run, and Seth Smith had a hit as the Padres scored two runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Eric Stults allowed four hits and struck out six over 7.0 scoreless innings to get the win and go to 3-11 for the season and Huston Street earned his 23rd save. For Saturday’s game the Padres start Ordisamer Despaigne who has won both of his starts. For the season Despaigne has allowed nine hits and a run while striking out three over 13.2 innings for a 2-0 record and a 0.66 ERA.

The San Francisco Giants struggled at the plate on Friday and the result was a loss at San Diego. Buster Posey, Hunter Pence, and Michael Morse each ad hits as the Giants didn’t score on four hits. Starting pitcher Matt Cain’s troubles continued as he allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-7 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Giants start Tim Hudson who has lost his last three starts. For the season Hudson has allowed 100 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 70 over 107.2 innings for a 7-5 record and a 2.59 ERA.
San Diego is 5-0 in their last five games, 6-1 against a team with a winning record, and 5-1 in their last six games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. The Giants are 5-18 in their last 23 games, 3-10 as a favorite, and 5-2 in Hudson’s last seven starts against the NL West. San Francisco is 2-6 in their last eight games in San Diego.
The hasn’t been much scoring between these two and I don’t expect many here so my free pick is the under.
