The Miami Marlins make a trip to Chase Field to open a weekday series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Miami has been fading badly over the past few weeks but given the nature of the NL East the Marlins are still in the thick of things in third place if they can rediscover consistency on the mound and at the plate. The Marlins have won consecutive contests following an 8-4 victory at St Louis on Sundaywith both the arms and bats contributing. Henderson Alvarez continued to throw well with a run plated on a solo jack through seven frames. Jarrod Saltalamacchia slugged a three run bomb while Marcell Ozuna and Jeff Baker knocked in a pair of runs each. Tom Koehler is scheduled to be on the hill Monday where he will face the Diamondbacks for the first time in 2014. Koehler has gone 6-6 with a 3.48 ERA over 17 outings.

The problem for the Diamondbacks is they got off to such a slow start that they have yet to recover and at this stage of the game it appears it is too late. The best Arizona can do is play the second half of 2014 strong and perhaps give a few players a look. The Snakes picked up a 3-1 decision over the white hot Braves on the road Sunday behind a strong performance on the mound from Wade Miley who allowed the lone run on five hits through 6.2 innings while striking out eight. The offense posted five hits and walked four times with Paul Goldschmidt hammering a two run bomb while Nick Evans ripped an RBI single. Chase Anderson gets the ball in the series opener for his first ever meeting with the Marlins. Anderson has struggled in back to back losses where he has given up a combined seven runs in 8.2 frames.
I'm simply going with the Marlins who in my view have the advantage on the mound and at the plate as dogs...
