The Cincinnati Reds look to get hot again when the Chicago Cubs visit Great American Ball Park.
The Cubs have apparently called it a season and will see what the current group of players can do after trading away Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija to Oakland. The Cubbies were mired in the basement of the NL Central and were in need of help on the mound and at the plate although it was the offense that came up short in a 2-1 loss at Washington. Jake Arrieta was outstanding on the mound once again with a run plated over six frames with Pedro Stropp taking the loss with a run allowed in the 8th. The offense missed out on chances with ten hits and three walks with Starlin Castro driving in the lone run with a sac fly. The Cubs open the series on the mound with Edwin Jackson who faces Cincinnati for the 4th time in 2014. Overall Jackson is 5-8 with a 4.99 ERA over 17 starts.

The Reds had appeared to right the ship with their sights set on a possible run at Milwaukee in the National League Central but the offense has once again gone south in defeats in four of five. The offense didn't need to do much Sunday with Mat Latos tossing darts in a 4-2 victory over the division leading Brewers. Latos allowed both runs through eight innings on four hits and a free pass to improve to 2-1. The offense was Jay Bruce who broke a 2-2 tie in the 8th with a two run bomb to give him three RBI's on the day. Mike Leake willbe on the bump inthe series opener versus the visiting Cubs on Monday. Leake has gone 6-7 on the season with a 3.47 ERA covering 17 outings.
I think Cincinnati needs a strong series against Chicago to get back to winning. Leake is 7-2 versus Chicago so hopefully he makes it 8-2...
