The New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves face off on Monday at Citi Field in game one of their series.
The New York Mets are 10 games under .500 as key injuries and inconsistent play have them in fourth place in the NL East. The Mets are 19-22 at home this season, 3-7 in their last 10 games, and they are 10 gams back in the standings. As a team the Mets are hitting .239 with Daniel Murphy hitting .294, David Wright hitting .274, and Lucas Duda hitting .252. The Mets pitching staff has an ERA of 3.61 with the starters at 3.84 and the bullpen at 3.17. For game one against the Braves the Mets start Daisuke Matsuzaka who has lost his last three starts. For the season Matsuzaka has allowed 40 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 54 over 58 innings for a 3-3 record and a 3.72 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Atlanta Braves lead the NL East by a half of a game over the Washington Nationals but they are heading into the All Star Break with a full head of steam. The Braves are 24-20 on the road, 9-1 in their last 10 games, and are coming off of a loss on Sunday to Arizona. As a team the Braves are hitting .244 with Freddie Freeman at .294, Chris Johnson at .277, and Justin Upton hitting .273. The Braves pitching staff has an ERA of 3.22 with the starters at 3.26 and the bullpen at 3.13. For game one at Citi Field the Braves start Mike Minor who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Minor has allowed 87 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 70 over 70.1 innings for a 2-5 record and a 4.73 ERA.
New York is 4-9 against a left-handed starter, 4-8 in their last 12 games, and 4-0 in Matsuzaka’s last four home starts. Atlanta is 4-0 in their last four road games, 9-2 as a favorite, and 1-4 in Minor’s last five starts in game one of a series. Atlanta is 5-1 in the last six meetings of these two.
This is one of those games I don’t like as there are plenty of reasons not to like either of these teams in this spot and while I won’t be on this game personally, my play would be the Mets as a home dog just from a value standpoint.
