The Pittsburgh Pirates came into St. Louis as one of the hotter teams in baseball but that haven’t been able to get it done losing each game against the Cardinals this series. On Wednesday Neil Walker had two hits including a home run and Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer had hits as the Pirates scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Brandon Cumpton allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out tow over 3.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-3 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start Edinson Volquez who has won four of his last five starts. For the season Volquez has allowed 91 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 68 over 102 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.88 ERA.
St. Louis is 6-2 in their last eight games, 8-3 in their last 11 games as a favorite, and 1-4 in Miller’s last five home starts. Pittsburgh is 12-6 in their last 18 games, 13-6 in game four of a series, and 4-1 in Volquez’s last five starts with four days of rest. Pittsburgh is 2-11 in their last 13 games in St. Louis.
The Cardinals have made it look easy this series but look for the Pirates to get the win here behind Volquez.
