Last in the Central meets last in the West when the Cubs tangle with the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
After dropping eight of ten heading in to the break and trading away their two best pitcchers I think we know the Cubs are looking to 2015. The lone goal is to be a spoiler as last place in the National League Central is assured. The Cubs opened the second half of the season with a 5-4 loss at Arizona with Edwin Jackson allowing three runs in 5.1 frames with James Russell and Brian Schlitter each giving up single runs. Anthony Rizzo connected on a pair of homers and knocked in three with Ryan Sweeney rapping an RBI single. A struggling Travis Wood looks to turn things around at Chase Field versus the Diamondbacks. Wood has given up a combined 13 runs over three starts in 15 innings pitched.

Although the Diamondbacks are better then their record indicates their slow start has erased any hope they will do anything in the National League West. The offense and pitching still comes and goes so the best they could hope for is perhaps climb out of the division basement. The Diamondbacks took a positive step in the opener Friday as the offense rallied from an early 3-0 hole. Trevor Cahill was charged with three first inning runs before leaving after five innings with the pen giving up a single run the rest of the way. Arizona pounded out 12 hits with Didi Grgorius driving in a pair of rund while Paul Goldschmidt smacked his 17th homer. Wade Miley will be on the bump in game two of their series with the visiting Cubs on Saturday. Miley has won his last two with only a single run allowed on nine hits over 13.2 innings of work.
Even though both teams are last in their respective divisions I believe the Diamondbacks are the better club and I'll back them here...
