The Cincinnati Reds and the Washington Nationals face off on Friday in Cincinnati for game one of their weekend series.
The Cincinnati Reds fought their way back into the NL Central race but key injuries to players like Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips have sent them backwards in the standings once again. The Reds are 27-21 at home this season, 2-8 in their last 10 games, and they have lost six games in a row not winning since the All Star break. As a team the Reds are hitting .245 with Todd Frazier hitting .283, Billy Hamilton hitting .281, and Devin Mesoraco hitting .288. For game one against the Nationals the Reds start Alfredo Simon who was an All Start this season but who took a loss in his last start. For the season Simon has allowed 99 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 79 over 121.2 innings for a 12-4 record and a 2.74 ERA.

The Washington Nationals are sitting in first place in the NL East but it looks like a race that won’t be settled until late in the season. The Nationals are 25-24 on the road, 6-4 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss at Colorado on Wednesday. As a team the Nationals are hitting .251 with Jayson Werth hitting .285, Denard Span hitting .282, and Anthony Rendon hitting .278. For game one at Cincinnati Washington starts Tanner Roark who has won his last two start and six of his last eight. For the season Roark has allowed 110 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 90 over 120.2 innings for a 9-6 record and a 2.91 ERA.
Cincinnati is 7-2 in their last nine home games, 0-6 in their last six games as an underdog, and 14-3min Simon’s last 17 starts. Washington is 4-1 in their last five games, 1-4 in game one of a series, and 6-2 in Roark’s last eight starts.
I like the Reds here but it is just tough to know which Reds team shows up but Simon should get them to the strongest part of their bullpen and that should be good enough.
