The Los Angeles Angels host the Detroit Tigers in game three of their weekend series on Saturday.
The Tigers have had their share of hot and cold streaks and would like nothing better then to reel off a bunch of wins and silence the competition in the American League Central. That goal was put on hold Friday in a 2-1 defeat at Los Angeles. Drew Smyly was the tough luck loser with both runs plated on four hits over 5.2 innings while striking out eleven. The offense totaled six hits and walked once with Miguel Cabrera clubbing his 16th long ball of the season. Justin Verlander looks to right the ship when he toes the rubber at Los Angeles on Saturday. Verlander looks to build on a 4-3 victory at Arizona where he allowed all three runs in 6.2 frames.

The Angels are in the same boat as Detroit in that they too need a prolonged winning streak except their goal is not to pull away from the rest of the American League West but to stay on the heels of division leader Oakland. The Angels win Friday was huge not only because it broke up a bit of a downturn but the Athletics also lost. The name of the game was pitching with Tyler Skaggs allowing a solo homer through 5.2 frames while four relievers put up zeros. The bats mustered seven hits with Kole Calhoun and Efren Navarro driving in runs. The Angels give Saturday's start against the visiting Tigers to Matt Shoemaker. Shoemaker was hurt by the long ball in 4-2 defeat to Baltimore when he served up a pair of two run homers over 5.2 innings.
Verlander obviously has the name recognition, experience and everything else over Shoemaker but the Tigers have had problems with the Angels for some reason and right now I'm leaning their way...
