Ben Zobrist hit a home run and Matt Joyce, Yunel Escpbar, and Kevin Kiermaier each had two hits as the Rays scored three runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson allowed five hits and struck out five over 4.2 scoreless innings to not get the decision as Grant Balfour got the win and Jake McGee earned his 11th save. The Boston Red Sox had plenty of chances to score runs on Saturday but they failed to convert as they lost in Tampa Bay. David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, and Mike Napoli each had hits as the Red Sox failed to score a run on eight hits. Starting pitcher John Lackey allowed eight hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out four over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 11-7 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Red Sox start Allen Webster who fills in for Jake Peavy who was traded to San Francisco on Saturday. In Triple A this season Webster is 4-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 20 starts.
Tampa Bay is 7-1 in game three of a series, 5-0 against a team with a losing record, and 2-5 in Archer’s last seven starts. Boston is 6-3 on the road against a right handed starter, 0-5 in their last five games, and 2-9 on the road against a team with a losing record. Boston has lost five in a row at Tampa Bay.
