The St Louis Cardinals conclude their series with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Thursday.
The Cardinals biggest roadblock to making a run at Milwaukee in the National League Central right now is some inconsistency at the plate where a very dangerous offense has been on the quiet side. The offense remained silent Wednesday but it didn't matter with the pitching taking one on the chin in a 12-1 loss at San Diego. Joe Kelly gave up four runs in five innings with three relievers giving up eight more. The bats posted six hits with Peter Bourjos driving Matt Adams with the lone run. The Cardinals close the series with the Padres with Shelby Miller on the bump. Miller is looking for consistency and has gone 7-8 with a 4.20 ERA over 20 starts.

San Diego was as hot as you will see them a week or so ago but have since cooled down. A pretty good rotation was getting some support which is generally not the norm. On Wednesday we saw a rare offensive explosion although it wasn't needed with a strong performance on the mound from Jesse Hahn who gave up a run on four hits through seven innings. The bats took care of the rest with a 16 hit assault that featured homers from Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable who knocked in four runs apiece. Odrisamer Despaigne has been outstanding through five career starts before struggling last time out in a 5-3 loss at Atlanta. Despaigne gave up five runs (two earned) on six hits and five BB over 3.2 frames.
Obviously expecting the Padres to sweep St Louis seems like a long shot but it happens all the time in this game. The flipside is San Diego isn't very good but from what I have seen it's home team or walk away...
