The Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics take the field in the second game of their weekend set.

Kansas City has righted the ship at least for the present but they can't let up if they expect to recapture the American League Central lead from Detroit. The bats have been adequate in winning seven of ten heading in to Friday's opener with the A's but the pitching has been fantastic. The work on the mound was fantastic once again in a 1-0 decision at Oakland on Friday behind six scoreless innings from Jeremy Guthrie with four relievers finishing the job. The bats posted only four hits but that was enough with one being a solo jack off the bat of Raul Ibanez. Left hander Jason Vargas makes his first start since coming off the disabled list because of an appendectomy. Before getting sick Vargas was 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 19 starts with a 1.23 WHIP.

Oakland is tops in the American League West with the best record in the game but their lead is slim because the second place Angels have the second best record and don't seem to be going away. The A's saw their lead trimmed by a game after Friday's defeat that squandered a great effort by Sonny Gray who served up a solo homer in seven frames to take the loss. The Athletics offense never got going with four hits and a trio of base on balls to their credit with Josh Reddick going 3-4 with a pair of singles and a 9th inning double that gave his team a chance with two outs. Left hander Jon Lester makes his first start for the Athletics since being traded by the Red Sox. Lester was a bright spot for Boston with a 10-7 record and 2.52 ERA covering 21 starts where the Red Sox went 13-8.

I lean Oakland here because I don't know if Vargas is 100% healthy. I say lean because he has been too good to be such a huge dog so I won't touch either side...
