The Oakland Athletics look to pick up ground in the AL West race with a win over the Minnesota Twins.
Minnesota is probably going to be in a struggle to escape the basement in the American League Central as the good times don't last long enough and the bad times last a bit too long. The Twins saw a three game winning streak end in a 5-4, ten inning loss to visiting San Diego Wednesday. This one looked good with Kevin Correia alowing three runs in six frames but Glen Perkins blew the save with a run plated in the 9th before Anthony Swarzak took the loss in the 10th. The Twins racked up ten hits and seven walks with Trevor Plouffe going 2-4 with a homer and three RBI's. Minnesota turns to Yohan Pino on the bump versus the heavy hitting Athletics for the first time. The rookie has been up and down through eight starts that has seen him go 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA.

Oakland has made a few trades to bolster their rotation although it cost them a big bat in Yoenis Cespedes. Time will tell if the changes are enough to get them another American League West crown with the Angels breathing down their necks. The As took a step back in Wednesday's 7-3 defeat at the hands of visiting Tampa Bay. Starter Sonny Gray was tagged with all seven runs (six earned) on ten hits through 4.1 frames to fall to 12-5. The offense was a non factor with only four hits with Josh Reddick slugging a two run homer while Eric Sogard singled in a run and scored. Left hander Jon Lester makes his second appearance since being traded by the Red Sox when he faces the Twins. Lester won his A's debut 8-3 versus Kansas City with all three runs plated on nine hits over 6.2 innings.
The Athletics have dominated this match up but something about the way they are playing doesn't seem right to me and I don't know if there is value on them anyway...
