The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros begin a three-game series Friday at Minute Maid Park.
The Rangers have lost five of their last eight games and are 24 games below a .500 record. The Rangers pitching staff has allowed just one run in their last two games and has allowed three or less runs in nine of their last 16 games. That’s a slight improvement from a Rangers rotation that has the 29th ranked ERA in baseball at 4.81. Offensively, Adrian Beltre has a hit in eight of his last 10 games and Elvis Andrus has a 13-game hitting streak. Starting is Miles Mikolas, who is 1-4 with a 7.29 ERA and has 22 strikeouts in 33.1 innings. This will be Mikolas’ second career game against the Astros.

The Astros have split their last 10 games and are 21 games below a .500 record. Like the Rangers, the issue for the Astros is their pitching staff as six of their last seven losses have come when they’ve allowed four or more runs. The Astros have the 28th ranked ERA in baseball at 4.39 and have won six of their last eight games when holding a team udner four runs. Offensively, Chris Carter has homered four times in his last nine games and Matt Dominguez has a hit in seven of his last 10 games. Brett Oberholtzer takes the hill, and he’s 4-7 with a 4.17 ERA and has 58 strikeouts in 90.2 innings. Oberholtzer is 0-2 with a 2.12 ERA in three career games against the Rangers.
The Rangers are 2-7 in their last 9 vs. a team with a losing record and 1-5 in Mikolas' last 6 starts. The Astros are 4-1 in Oberholtzers last 5 home starts and 4-0 in Oberholtzers last 4 starts overall. The Rangers are 21-6 in the last 27 meetings in Houston.
I'm not comfortable with either one of these teams but Oberholtzer has been a lot more consistent this season. Give me the Astros at home.
