The Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Thursday in Detroit as they close out their interleague series.

The Detroit Tigers have watched their lead in the AL Central evaporate and while they are in second place in the division, they got back to winning on Wednesday. Nick Catellanos and Alex Avila hit home runs and Victor Martinez had three hits as the Tigers scored eight runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Bucj Farmer allowed six hits and four runs while striking out five over 6.0 innings but it was Blaine Hardy who pickd up the win. For Thursday’s game the Tigers start max Scherzer who had a no decision and a loss in his last two starts. For the season Scherzer has allowed 143 hits and 56 earned runs while striking out 182 over 161 innings for a 13-4 record and a 3.13 ERA.

The Pittsburgh Pirates won the first two games of heir series with the Tigers but on Wednesday they just didn’t have enough to get it done. Travis Snyder hit a home run and Russell Martin and Ike Davis had hits as the Pirates scored four runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Vance Worley allowed nine hits and five runs, three earned, while striking out four over 5.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 5-2 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start Francisco Liriano who is coming off of a loss in his last start. For the season Liriano has allowed 90 hits and 46 earned runs while striking out 114 over 108.1 innings for a 3-8 record and a 3.82 ERA.

Detroit is 5-1 in their last five home games, 1-4 in game four of a series, and 43-12 in Scherzer’s last 55 home starts. Pittsburgh is 5-1 against the AL Central, 6-2 in their last eight games, and 12-4 in Liriano’s last 16 starts against a team with a winning record. Pittsburgh is 5-1 in their last six games against Detroit.

The Pirates are playing better baseball but the Tigers just have the edge in this matchup.
