The San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Sunday in San Frnacisco as they close out their series.
The San Francisco Giants needed to come back from an early deficit on Saturday but they were able to get it done and got the win against the Phillies. Hunter pence had a home run, Michael Morse had three hits, and Joe Panik had two hits as the Giants scored six runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Tim Hudson didn’t have it as he allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out three lasting four innings and not getting a decision as Jeremy Affeldt got the win and Sergio Romo earned his 23rd save. For Sunday’s game the Giants start Tim Lincecum who has lost his last three decisions. The Philadelphia Phillies appeared to be in control of the game on Saturday but they let it get away and took the loss. Ben Revere had four hits, Ryan Howard had three hits, and Chase Utley and WIl Nieves had two hits each as the Phillies scored five runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick allowed five hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out just one over 5.0 innings to not get a decision as Justin De Fratus blew the save and Anthony Bastardo took the loss to fall to 5-7 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Phillies start David Buchanan who lost his last start. For the season Buchanan has allowed 72 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 49 over 71.2 innings for a 6-6 record and a 4.40 ERA.
San Francisco is 6-1 as a favorite, 3-6 in their last nine games, and 4-1 in Lincecum’s last five starts. Philadelphia is 1-5 in their last six games, 2-10 in their last 12 Sunday games, and 1-5 in Buchanan’s last six games after allowed more than five runs their previous game. Philadelphia is 2-7 in their last nine games in San Francisco.
This one looks like a coin flip but the Giants have the better bullpen and they are just a mild lean for me here at best.
