The Atlanta Braves aren’t gaining any ground on the Nationals in the NL East but they are stringing together wins including the pummeling of the Pirates on Tuesday. Justin Upton and Evan Gattis each hit home runs and Justin Upton, Freddie Freeman, and B.J. Upton each had two hits as the Braves scored 11 runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Aaron Harang allowed nine hits and three runs while striking out four over 8.1 innings to get the win and go to 10-7 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Braves start Alex Wood who has won his last two starts. For the season Wood has allowed 115 hits and 42 earned runs while striking out 120 over 123 innings for a 9-9 record and a 3.07 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 19-8 in their last 27 home games, 0-5 against the NL East, and 4-1 in Cole’s last five home starts. Atlanta is 5-0 in their last five games, 7-2 in game three of a series, and 1-6 in Wood’s last seven road starts. Atlanta has won their last five games against Pittsburgh.
The Braves are rolling but look for Cole to come up big here and while it is just a lean the Pirates are my pick.
