The New York Mets begin a west coast swing with a stop at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.
The New York Mets probably are done from a competitive standpoint in the National League East but they have looked better in 2014 then in recent years. The Mets enjoyed a rare offensive explosion in an 8-5 victory to end a three game skid on Wednesday night. Zack Wheeler was the beneficiary of the scoring with four runs allowed (two earned) over 5.2 frames to up his record to 9-8. The bats totaled ten hits and walked five times with Eric Campbell going deep while Lucas Duda homered and singled and drove in three. Left hander Jon Niese gets the ball in Friday's series opener at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Niese has won back to back starts with five runs given up on 12 hits including three homers in 13 frames.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are leading the National League West but they don't seem to be the same team that dominated the division in 2013. The runs aren't as easy to come by and that is a big worry right now even though another great pitching perfomance from Clayton Kershaw was barely enough to squeeze by the Padres on Thursday. The Dodgers picked a 2-1 decision with Kershaw allowing a run on three hits through eight frames while striking out ten. The offense mustered four hits and a pair of walks with Justin Turner smacking a two run bomb to win it in the 8th. Dan Haren gets the call to the mound versus the New York Mets who he opposes for the second time in 2014. Haren is coming in off of a 7-2 loss to Milwaukee where he gave up six runs (three earned) in three innings.
The Dodgers are clearly the better team but I have to give the edge on the mound to the Mets and Niese. The danger is New York can't hit so no play for me but if I had to do something it would be small on the visitors...
