The San Diego Padres hope to even their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
As well as San Diego had been playing a few weeks ago to approach .500, they are now heading in the opposite direction after a 5-1 defeat at Chase Field has them looking at losses in six of eight. The offense struggled once again which was bad news with Odrisamer Despaigne giving up four runs (three earned) over five innings of work. The offense managed just four hits with the only run scored in the 9th after the game had been decided. Andrew Cashner comes off the diabled list to take the mound versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cashner is 2-6 on the season with a 2.36 ERA in 12 outings but hasn't gotten much support.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been fading with neither the offense or work on the mound showing up on the same day. The Diamondbacks had dropped six of eight before a series opening win over the visiting Padres behind great pitching and solid hitting. Josh Collmenter was at his very best with an unearned run plated through 8.1 innings pitched. The Snakes totaled seven hits and a pair of bases on balls with Miguel Montero going deep and knocking in a pair of runs. Left hander Vidal Nuno takes the ball for the first time ever against the San Diego Padres. Nuno has thrown the ball well since coming over from the Yankees but he is 0-3 with a 3.72 ERA in eight starts.
The problem in backing San Diego is they don't hit left handers and Cashner is fresh off the DL. Backing Arizona means taking Nuno with whom the Snakes are 0-8 so no advantage to exploit from what I see...
