The Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs close out their series on Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Reds bounced back from Tuesday’s loss by beating the Cubs on Wednesday. Chris Heisey hit a home run and Billy Hamilton, Devin Meseraco, and Skip Schumaker each had two hits as the Reds scored seven runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Mat Latos allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out 10 over 7.0 innings to get the win to raise his record to 5-3 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Reds start Dylan Axelrod who lost his first start for the Reds. In his first outing Axelrod allowed seven hits over six innings for an ERA of 3.00.

The Chicago Cubs battled back several times on Wednesday but in the end they came up short and took he loss in Cincinnati. Luis Valbuena and Jorge Soler each hit home runs and Chris Coghlan had two hits as the Cubs scored five runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Jacob Turner allowed seven hits and six runs while striking out one over 3.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-8 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Cubs start Jake Arrieta who has win his last two starts. For the season Arrieta has allowed 93 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 127 over 124.1 innings for a 7-4 record and a 2.53 ERA.
Cincinnati is 3- 7 in game three of a series, 3-5 in their last eight home games, and 3-8 in their last 11 games. Chicago is 4-1 in their last five games, 18-38 in game three of a series, and 6-2 in Arrieta’s last eight starts against a team with a losing record. Chicago is 14-39 in their last 53 games in Cincinnati.
